Rabbie is a proud lion tamer, but it bothers and insults him that the grow-ups claim that his self-made lion talks. Rabbie knows this is impossible but still other people keep hearing the silent laughter of the toy lion. Whatever the truth, the boy takes it as mocking and therefore often acts hostily towards adults.
